Once a port facing the island of Peniche, the small town of Atouguia da Baleia is situated approximately 6.5 km southeast of Peniche, into which it was integrated in 1836. Quite apart from its two main churches (see separate entries), it has other features of interest to visitors. The 17th century Touril, in front of the Nossa Senhora da Conceição Church, is thought to have been used occasionally for bullfighting and evidence of the stones which marked its perimeter can be seen. In addition there are the remains of the castle and the town pelourinho (pillory) which can be visited.
