Built as a result of the Expo 98 master plan, this striking modern building fulfilled the Portuguese need for a multi-purpose international sports and events venue. Officially the largest Portuguese indoor arena, it has been said to be shaped like an upturned ship, or more fancifully a UFO which has landed in the city. The largest attendance to date was for a pop concert when some 20,000 were present. Other events staged include the World Indoor Athletic Championships and a Masters Tennis Tournament.
