Arraiolos is a pleasant Alentejo town dating back to the second century BC. The mediaeval castle was built at the orders of the king, D. Dinis (1279-1325), to protect the town. Arraiolos is internationally famous thanks to the carpets produced here by the local craftsmen and women, an industry that has been referred to in documents as long ago as the sixteenth century. A remarkably well-preserved mediaeval pillory (pelorhino) reminds visitors of the town’s heritage from the Middle Ages. Also worth visiting is the Baroque Misericórdia Church.
