Arouca Convent lies 34 km east of Santa Maria da Feira; it was founded in 1091 and joined the Cistercian Order in 1220. Its great benefactor was Mafalda, the daughter of King Sancho I, who took the veil and later died here in 1256. Her uncorrupted body was discovered in 1616, which led to her beatification in 1793. The church was restored in the 18th century and Mafalda’s effigy rests on her own altar in a silver and ebony casket, over her mummified remains. The convent was dissolved in 1866. When visiting, particularly note the great organ, choir stalls and cloister.
