Fishing has been the source of Armação de Pêra’s wealth for centuries, as sardines and tuna were salted and sold to other provinces of Portugal. In the 17th century a prosperous boat owner decided to build a fort to defend the settlement against raids from pirates and corsair. One of the walls of this old fortification, with a doorway and above it the royal coat of arms, still stands overlooking the sea. Inside is a chapel, also from the 17th century, dedicated to Santo Antonio (Saint Anthony). Fishing nets are still to be seen on Praia dos Pescadores (Fishermen’s beach).
