The town of Armamar is located approximately 22 km east of Lamego in attractive scenery with mountains, woods, valleys, apple orchards and, as it is in the Douro wine region, terraced vineyards. The 13th century Igreja Matriz de São Miguel is associated with Egaz Moniz, adviser to Afonso Henriques, Portugal’s first king, and has an interesting portal and bell tower. Other sites of interest are São Domingos de Fontelo chapel to the northwest, which is a fine viewpoint, the 14th century Ferreirim Convent Church (see separate entry) and the parish church of Tões. There are many beautiful manor houses in the area.
