Arganil is believed to be the Roman city of Argos and there is evidence of early settlements in the region. The São Gens church, in the Rua Visconde de Sanches Frias, is said to date from the 14th century and the Igreja da Misericórdia in the Rua Condessa de Canas is also of interest. The Museu de Etnografia in the Avenida das Forças Armadas also houses the tourist office. Other attractions include the Fonte de Bica and the pillory. There are many delightful mountainside villages, in addition to Vila Cova de Alva, Coja and Piódão (see separate entries) there are Benfeita, Malhada Chã and Barriosa.
