This monumental arch, inaugurated in 1812, and designed by the architect Francisco Xavier Fabri for Bishop Dom Francisco do Avelar was built on the site of a medieval gate. The archway is surmounted by a bell tower and contains a niche, from which a statue of St Thomas Aquinas, the patron saint of Faro, surveys the scene. It also contains stork nests, another common feature in Faro. It is the northern arch of the old town wall and ramparts and is at the southern end of the Manuel Bivar Park.
