Not far from the town of Alter do Chão is Ferragial d’El Rei, the home of the Estação Arqueológica. This is a fascinating place dating back many centuries through the region’s history. There are vestiges to be found here from the different ages, including a building that contains several mosaics and an almost intact thermal spa. During Roman times the area was known as Abelterium, a small settlement that was cited in the itinerary of António. Most of the exhibits and buildings relate to this time.
