The present 19th century house at 5, Rua de Dom Hugo is an interesting archaeological site, located in one of the oldest streets in medieval Porto. Excavations more than three metres deep, which took place in the 1980s, revealed use of the site as far back as the 4th/5th centuries BC, and artefacts recovered date from the 3rd and 4th century BC to modern times. These help trace the varied use and history of the house and the surrounding area. The only remaining section of the first medieval wall is located by the house.
