Housed in the former convent of Nossa Senhora da Assunçao since 1973, the museum displays Roman, Medieval and Manueline artefacts. Perhaps its most interesting exhibit is the large Roman floor mosaic displaying a head of Neptune. This dates from the 3rd century AD and was found near the railway station. The convent was founded in 1518 by Dona Leonor, the sister of Manuel I, and the building is notable for its two-storey cloister built by Alfonso Pires in 1540. Note also the art collection of diplomat Ferreira d’Almeida, consisting of 19th century paintings, silver and glass.
