The open-air Archaeological Museum has been housed on the site of the ruins of the Palace of the Dukes since 1920, although it was used for storing artefacts before that date. Amongst the items on display are sarcophagi, heraldic shields, stone crosses and an 18th century tiled fountain. The most famous exhibit is the Cruzeiro do Senhor do Galo, a cross paying tribute to the Barcelos Cock and telling the story of the city’s emblem in relief carvings. A magnificent 16th century Gothic pillory stands in front of the ruins.
