South of the Praça da Repúblic, in the former Jesuit convent (Convento dos Jesuitas) is the town library of Elvas and its museum, the Museu de António Tomás Pires, also known as the Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Elvas. The museum contains an impressive collection of religious art, archaeology (in particular Roman mosaics), coins, pictures and sculpture from the 13th to the 16th century. Amongst the library’s 55,000 volumes are some very rare editions, including a 16th century bible.
