The 16th century old town hall was started in the reign of King Manuel I and completed during that of King John III. It is a severe granite building, since restored, which dominates the eastern end of Viana do Castelo’s principal square. The ground floor has three Gothic arches fronting an arcade where bread used to be sold and the upper floor has three corresponding windows with wrought iron balconies. The façade is crenellated at roof level and above the centre window there is a carved royal coat of arms. The building is now used for exhibitions.
