There are five cromlechs (also called dolmen or anta) located in Coureleiros. Dolmens are Neolithic structures, usually comprised of a large horizontal capstone supported by a number of smaller vertical stones. It is believed that they were associated with the burial, or are actual burial sites, of important personages. This is one of the largest groups of dolmens in the Alentejo. The official scientific designation is “Anta dos Coureleiros”. They are well signposted on the road to Póvoa e Meadas. Although there are five antas (dolmens), only four are easy to visit.
