Located about 20 km east of Pombal, the town of Ansião received its charter in 1514 from King Manuel I (1495-1521), but has references as far back as 1175. Attractions include the 17th century pillory, Cal Bridge and Igreja Matriz as well as the Misericórdia and Senhor Bonfim chapels. Nearby, the region’s ancient history is apparent from the Iron Age settlement at the Escampado de São Miguel and dolmens at Atalaia, Alto do Pisca and Trás de Figueiró. The parish church of Chão de Couce, about 11 km to the southeast, contains a beautiful 1933 work by the naturalist painter José Malhoa.
