One of the outstanding tourist sights of Elvas, the Amoreira Aqueduct dates from 1498 when the project started under the supervision of Francisco de Arruda, an architect who worked on the Tower of Belém in Lisbon. The works were continued by Afonso Álvares, Diogo Marques and Pero Vaz Pereira, who finally completed the aqueduct in 1622. With a total extension of around 8 km, this construction has 843 arches in up to five tiers, with some of its towers rising above 30 metres (100 feet). It underwent important conservation works in the 19th century.
