About 12 km west of Évora, the Amendres Cromlech is also known as the Portuguese Stonehenge. It dates from between 4000-5000 BC and is the largest group of structured menhirs in the Iberian Peninsula, and one of the largest in Europe. This huge oval megalithic monument originally consisted of more than 100 stones and it is known that the complex was built in several phases. Apart from its religious function, it is believed that it was also used as a primitive astronomical observatory. It is suggested that your visit is combined with that to the Escoural cave.
