Amares, located about 16 km northeast of Braga, lies between the River Cávado valley and the Serra do Gerês Mountains. It is known for its oranges and vinho verde and has a number of pretty picturesque villages. Architectural sites worth visiting, include the Castle Tower at Carrazedo, the ruins of the Vasconelas Tower at Ferreiros and the Tower of Donegas which is part of a 17th century manor house. To the west is the 11th century monastery of Rendufe, which has a church with interesting 18th century carved woodwork and there is a pretty medieval bridge over the River Homem nearby.
