The lovely town of Amarante is one of the gems of the north of Portugal, its natural features being one of its main attractions. The majestic Serra do Marão provide the backdrop to the town which is divided by the Tâmega River, the Douro River’s longest tributary. The narrow streets with 17th century mansions with painted colourful wooden balconies and the restaurants seating diners on the river banks leave an indelible impression. Amarante’s other attractions are separately listed, but do not miss the famous sweets and cakes with exotic sounding names such as brisas do Tâmega and papas do anjo.
