The museum is named after, and houses a collection of the works of, Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso (1887-1918), one of Portugal’s most famous 20th century cubist artists, who was born here. It occupies the old monastery cloister next to São Gonçalo church and was founded in 1947 by Albano Sardoeira, to exhibit items relating to the history of the town and to honour Amarante’s most famous artists and writers. Amongst these are the artist António Carneiro (1872-1930), also born here, and the poet Teixeira de Pascoais (1877-1952), who was inspired by the region and whose statue stands in the small garden outside.
