The Alvão Nature Reserve is located north of Vila Real. At 28 square miles in area, it is the smallest of Portugal’s natural parks. It lies between the Corgo and Tâmega rivers and reaches a height of 1,339 metres at Alto das Caravelas. The fauna in the reserve is exceptionally abundant and amphibians and reptiles are widely found. Birds of prey, as well as smaller birds, find this a favourable location. Wolves and otters can occasionally be seen. The two picturesque hamlets of Ermelo and Lamas de Olo are of particular interest (see separate entries).
