Located 12 km southeast of Porto de Mos, the Alvados caves were discovered in 1964 by quarry workers in the Serra dos Candeeiros. The entrance is at an altitude of 440 metres, but inside you descend 100 metres. The caves were formed in the middle Jurassic age about 150 million years ago, in the days of dinosaurs, whose footprints can be seen in the area. The stalagmites and stalactites form fairytale figures and the rooms have names, such as ‘Statue’, ‘Sleeping Beauty’ ‘Cypress’, ‘Wonderful Planet’ and ‘Lake of Wonders’. The cave temperature is 17 ºC.
