The Alto da Memória obelisk offers an excellent view over the city. This obelisk was erected on the site of the first fortress of the archipelago, the Castelo de São Luís, in memory of the presence of King Dom Pedro IV in Angra during the constitutional conflicts. The foundation stone for this monument was laid in 1845 after the 15th century castle, originally built to protect the upper part of the town, had been torn down. The viewpoint is at an altitude of 87 metres, providing superb panoramic views.
