Alter do Chão has been inhabited since the Roman period, when it was called Abelterium. It was founded on the road that connected Lisbon with Merida in Spain. From the fourteenth century onwards, the town developed around the castle built by D. Pedro I in 1359. The town also has some fine 17th and 18th century houses and a beautiful 16th century marble fountain. Alter do Chão is also famous for Coudelaria Real, the Royal Stud Farm, founded in 1748 by D. João V.
