It is claimed that Alte, which has existed since the Roman occupation, is the village most typical of the Algarve. Whitewashed houses, windows and façades edged with colourful borders, ornate chimneys and a delightful air of tranquillity, ensure that the streets of Alte’s historic centre have retained their original charm. The town is a delightful snapshot of the real Algarve and shouldn’t be missed. As well as having a main church, there is also the Chapel of São Luís, built at the beginning of the 15th century and subsequently altered to become typical of an 18th century country church.
