The picturesque village of Altares, the island’s northernmost settlement, is perched above the sea and backed by a small hill. An old whale lookout, providing extensive views across endless pastures stretching on the slopes up to the Caldeira de Santa Barbara, provides a wonderful spot to get a sense of the island. The village also boasts a luxuriantly decorated ‘império’, featuring a façade covered with glazed tiles, dating from 1903 and a parish church, rebuilt in the beginning of the 20th century to replace the old church in the same spot, which had suffered through earthquakes and storms in the 19th century.
