Located 22km southeast of Torres Vedras, the Alqueidão Fort was an important defensive position and part of the Lines of Torres Vedras set up in 1809 by Arthur Wellesley (later the Duke of Wellington). At one stage he visited the Sobral Grand Redoubt, as it was known, on an almost daily basis. You can still make out the firing positions, trenches and ditches that were used to reinforce this defensive stronghold, where Marshall Masséna’s French army was once repulsed. There are breathtaking views over the whole of the Atlantic coastline and the magnificent countryside of the western region.
