Situated about 35 km north of Castelo Branco, just off the A23 on the slope of Gardunha Mountain, is the lovely village of Alpedrinha. Called Petratinia by the Romans, they left behind the mystery of a tunnel, starting in one of the village streets but with an undiscovered destination. The restored typical houses add charm, with their porches and wooden balconies and pots of geraniums. Amongst the many attractions are the fountains, including the Baroque Chafariz Real from the time of King João V (1706-1750), and the Capela do Leão with a portal said to be by the sculptor Nicolau Chanterene.
