About 10km due west of Santarém lies the small town of Almoster and the 13th century church of the Bernadine Convent of Santa Maria. Founded in 1289, it is said that Yolande Gomes, a jewess who had an illegitimate son by the Infante Luís of Portugal, died here as a nun on 6th June 1568. The church was restored in Baroque style in the 18th century and has some outstanding 17th century azulejos, a 14th century carved wooden cross on a lateral altar and some exceptional late 17th century gilt carved gilt woodwork. Sadly, it is in need of repair.
