Formerly called Povoa de Almodôvar, King Dinis granted Almodôvar a royal charter in the year 1285. Highlights of the town include an astonishing sculpture of a fire engine, complete with firemen; an imposing parish church; the small Sao Francisco Convent and the Misericordia (Mercy) Church, which is close to the museum where paintings by Alentejo artist, Severo Portela, are on display. Just outside town is a Roman bridge in remarkably good condition. A walk to the Santo Amaro chapel to appreciate the beautiful view of the Alentejo fields is a must.
