The Arco de Almedina is the gateway to the old city and is part of the 11th century wall built by the Arab conqueror Almansor. The tower over the arch has had many uses and in the 14th and 15th centuries was the Casa da Câmara, the equivalent of the town hall. It later became the Casa de Audiência (the Council House) and the tower bell summoned meetings and also announced the opening and closing times of the gate. It is presently the Municipal archive. The street leading uphill from the arch, the Rua de Quebra-Costas, translates aptly as ‘backbreaker’ street.
