The church and surrounding area retain much of the character and charm of the Algarve of centuries past. The Church of São Lourenço de Almancil was built in the first half of the 18th century. Baroque in style, the interior decoration is a classic work of Portuguese azulejo (decorative tiling) art. The main altar has a gilded woodwork altarpiece with walls completely covered by azulejo panels recounting scenes from the life of São Lourenço, produced by Policarpo de Oliveira Bernardes. This set of panels, produced in 1730, is one of the best examples of using azulejo tiles in architecture.
