Aljustrel is the modern incarnation of the old roman city of Vipasca, called Al-luster by the Moors during their occupation. In 1234, during the reign of D. Sancho II, D. Paio Peres Correia and the Knights of the Order of Santiago da Espada (Saint James of the Sword) took possession of the town. Diverse archaeological finds show that this has been a mining town since 3,000 years before Christ. After the Roman occupation the mines fell into disuse, but reopened on a major scale in 1849. Since 1993 the mines have been inactive, but still have a considerable impact on the region.
