Located about 43 km southeast of Vila Real in the heart of the Douro region, Alijó has been inhabited since prehistoric times, although its first charter is dated 1226. The Carmelite sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Piedade is at Sanfins do Douro, 7 km northwest of Alijó. It has monuments featuring images of the Way of the Cross leading to the sanctuary and a statue of the Virgin Mary with Christ. Further north at Parafita is the 18th century Senhor de Parafita sanctuary, the scene of miracles. Sabrosa, 19 km west of Alijó, has Iron Age hill-top forts and Palaeo-Christian tombs.
