Alfândega da Fé, about 77 km southwest of Bragança, was founded by the Moors, although it was inhabited in prehistoric times, as evidenced by rupestral engravings. The Clock Tower is all that remains of the 14th century castle built by king Dinis. Worth visiting are the 18th century parish church of Sambade to the north and the chapel of São Bernardino at Gebelim, further northeast. The Estevinha dam has facilities for water sports and trout for fishermen. If you should visit in February/ March, your lasting memory may well be the almond trees in blossom, for which the area is justly famous.
