Alfaiates is located about 18 km east of Sabugal and its castle, which used to be known as ‘Castle of the Moon’, is thought to date back to the 13th century and to have been built by King Afonso X of Castile and León. Following the Treaty of Alcañices in 1297, which established the boundaries between Portugal and Spain, the castle became Portuguese. During the time of the French invasions (1807-1814) the castle played a key role and, if you take in its panoramic view of the surrounding countryside, you can understand its strategic importance.
