The old part of Alenquer, the Vila Alta, climbs steeply up the hillside and is often likened to a Nativity scene, particularly at Christmas when the town has huge figures of the Holy Family and others on display. The Museu João Mário (Tel.+351 263 732 534), located at the Travessa de São Benedito, contains over four hundred paintings and sculptures including works by Columbano, Silva Porto, Roque Gameiro, Veloso Salgado. Worth visiting is the 15th/16th century Maria Madalena church at nearby Aldeia Gavinha. The celebrated navigator Pêro de Alenquer, who sailed with Bartolomeu Dias and Vasco da Gama, was born in Alenquer.
