The Capela de Nossa Senhora da Alegria (Our Lady of Joy) is close to the Senhor do Barrocas Chapel (see separate entry) and is one of the oldest churches in Aveiro. It was headquarters to the large medieval brotherhood of fishermen who made the first fishing trips to Newfoundland around 1500. Only the Gothic triumphal arch remains from the original but there is some well preserved 17th century azulejo tiling in the nave. In the churchyard, sheltered by a pyramid shaped roof, is an interesting cross which dates back to 1554.
