Alcoutim, situated where the Guadiana becomes tidal, has steep and narrow streets typical of an Algarvian hill town. With houses hundreds of years old and the tall white walls of the Misericórdia Church, the town has a beauty and simplicity rarely seen in today’s bustling world. At the riverside, near to the former residence of the Counts of Alcoutim, are open air cafés to sit and watch the returning the fishing boats, the sailing yachts anchored in the little marina or the Spanish town on the other river bank.
