Alcácer do Sal has been settled since the earliest of times, with each of its peoples leaving archaeological traces behind. Named by the Romans, Salacia Urbs Imperatoria, the town had strategic importance due to its position on the Sado River. During the Moorish occupation (from the 8th century), Alcácer became capital of the Al-Kasser province. The Muslim city was protected by double walls, with the battlements overlooked by 30 towers, making it one of the best defended towns on the Iberian Peninsula. In 1217 it was conquered by King Afonso II and handed over to the Military Order of Santiago who established headquarters in the fortress.
