With its whitewashed walls, Alcantarilha presents itself as a village of modest houses scattered prettily across the hillside, but this little town in Silves has a long history. Its castle is medieval in origin, and was built to defend the population of Alcantarilha and the surrounding villages from marauding Moorish pirates. Rebuilt in the 16th and 17th centuries, it now stands in ruins. The Mercy church, although unremarkable from the outside, has a beautiful interior. In particular, the statues and carved retable on the altar are worth seeing. The parish church of Alcantarilha has been dealt with as a separate entry.
