Opened in 1928, the Albert Sampaio museum is located in the Cloisters, Chapter house and Priory of the former Collegiate Church of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira. It was established to house the collections of the old chapter house and other churches, convents and monasteries in the Guimarães region. Its outstanding items are the tunic worn by King João I at the battle of Aljubarrota in 1385, the magnificent gothic altarpiece in gilded silver from the end of the 14th century representing the Nativity, and a fresco depicting Salome gloating over the severed head of John the Baptist.
