Alandroal is situated close to the Spanish border in the midst of Portugal’s lush green countryside. The beautiful Arabic sounding name betrays the town’s cultural roots, as its history is bound up with the Moors. Its origins are proudly emblazoned on the city coat of arms, which shows that it belongs to the Order of Aviz. The castle dominates the town and the keep is particularly of interest, with its gate flanked by towers and a horseshoe arch, built of local marble. Close by is the parish church of Nossa Senhora da Graça. There are some lovely sights in the town, including an ornamental water trough.
