Opened in July 1971, the museum today occupies about 3,000 square metres of indoor and outdoor exhibition space and owns 112 aircraft, of which about 20 are on display. It is dedicated to the history of both civil and military Portuguese aviation. There are a variety of accessories shown including flight equipment, flight simulators and air armament. Amongst the many interesting items is a replica of a Blériot IX, the first aircraft to fly in Portugal, and a mock-up of the first Portuguese satellite from 1993. There are branches of the museum at other air force bases such as Sintra.
