Situated above the River Tagus, Abrantes was a strategic base during both the Reconquest and the Peninsular War, used at different times by both the Duke of Wellington and General Junot of France. The castle remains dominate the town, which is famous for its floral decorations and Palha de Abrantes and Tigeladas confectionary. The Misericórdia church on Rua Da República dates from 1584 and has six outstanding religious panels by Gregório Lopes (1490-1550). Also worth visiting are the 16/17th century Mannerist churches of Igreja de São Vicente (Largo de São Vicente) and Igreja de São João Baptista (Adro de São João).
