Other important features of the abbey include the Kings’ Room (Sala dos Reis), with 18th century tiling depicting abbey’s founding and the statues of kings on the walls. The Dormitories, which were only divided into cells in the 16th century and the monks’ meeting place, the Chapter House, are also interesting. Most evocative of all are the Refectory, where the monks ate in silence whilst bible readings were given from the exquisite pulpit, and the vast Kitchen, which has a canal diverted from the Alcoa River, an octagonal Lavabo and huge oven, described by William Beckford as ‘the most distinguished temple of gluttony in all Europe.’
