Well worth a visit, the attractive Abadia Sanctuary is located in beautiful surroundings on the upper slopes of a valley about 4 km from the Santa Maria do Bouro Monastery (see separate entry). Legend has it that an image of the Virgin Mary was discovered nearby in a natural cave. The present church has a façade rebuilt in 1725 and has azulejo tiling to the balcony from which mass is celebrated on the 15th August, the day of pilgrimage. The Baroque interior has a 14th century image of the Virgin Mary and is richly decorated in Rococo style.
